Dani Alves free transfer won’t solve Man City full-back situation – Simon Bajkowski

Manchester City are once again being linked with a move for Dani Alves, two years after the Brazilian turned his back on the Blues to join Paris Saint-Germain.

It’s easy to see why. Alves is a disciple of Pep Guardiola , a player the manager trusts absolutely would buy into his methods and not need time to get up to speed with what he has missed. Despite his age (he turned 36 in May) seeing him not fit the profile of a typical City signing , his performances at the Copa America showed that the veteran can still deliver on the big stage.

On top of that, the Blues are open to signing a right-back this summer. Kyle Walker may have signed a new deal at the Etihad but doubts remain over Danilo’s future and should he choose to leave the club will want even greater competition for their England international.

That’s why Juventus‘ Joao Cancelo has come into the picture, and why links with Alves – significantly cheaper given he is available on a free transfer – make sense.

However, Rodri’s arrival means it isn’t simple a case of weighing up Alves or Cancelo as the better option because Danilo remains the sticking point.

The Premier League and Champions League allow clubs to register just 17 non-homegrown players in their squads and City have the following 17 (not counting Eliaquim Mangala): Ederson, Claudio Bravo, Danilo, Aymeric Laporte, Benjamin Mendy, Nicolas Otamendi, Ilkay Gundogan, Aleks Zinchenko, Rodri, Kevin De Bruyne, Bernardo Silva, David Silva, Fernandinho, Riyad Mahrez, Leroy Sane, Sergio Aguero and Gabriel Jesus.

Unless they are going to bin off one of the key men they are expecting to take into next season, the only way there is going to be space for either Alves or Cancelo to come in will be if Danilo leaves – the club can’t bring in extra competition for Walker’s place that doesn’t count as homegrown talent.

Given the club have already made it plain to Danilo that he is valued at the club and would want good money for him if he wants to leave, it is expected that the Brazilian will fly out with the Blues for their pre-season tour of the Far East, which ends with barely more than a week of the transfer window remaining.

It makes sense for City to have replacements lined up pending Danilo’s future, but they cannot bring anyone in unless they sell first.
