Man City’s latest transfer target is veteran goalkeeper Asier Riesgo

Manchester City are considering a move for 35-year-old Eibar goalkeeper Asier Riesgo to become their third-choice keeper.

With Claudio Bravo due back after an Achilles injury which kept him out for the entire season, City will consider loan moves for Aro Muric – wanted by Championship clubs Preston and Nottingham Forest – and Danny Grimshaw.

But Pep Guardiola wants experienced back-up to first choice Ederson and Bravo, and Riesgo has emerged as a surprise option on a free transfer.

The former Real Sociedad stopper’s previous claim to fame was that he was the first goalkeeper to save a Lionel Messi penalty, clawing away the Argentine’s spot kick in a 2-0 defeat by Barcelona while on loan at Recreativo de Huelva in 2009.

He also had a trial for Tottenham in 2009 after Carlo Cudicini fell off a motorbike.

His career has been far from stellar – he spent five years – from 2010 to 2015 – as back-up keeper at Osasuna, playing just 26 games.

He has also been happy to be number two for four years at Eibar – and it could be the fact that he is content to be experienced back-up which makes him a good fit, in the same way Stuart Taylor spent three years at City without playing for the first team.

Riesgo has plenty of connections at City – he was number three behind Bravo at Sociedad, where he also worked with current goalkeeping coach Xabier Mancisidor, who has recommended him to Guardiola.
