Granit Xhaka could land Arsenal captaincy as Atletico Madrid transfer collapses
They turned to the Swiss international when talks over Llorente became deadlocked, with Arsenal braced for a bid.
But Llorente’s agent met with Atletico again yesterday and the 24-year-old will now sign a five-year deal pending a medical.
Xhaka’s future has been in doubt since he was linked with a move to Inter Milan earlier this summer, but a bid never materialised.
It is understood the midfielder is happy at the Emirates, where he still has four years left to run on his contract.
And with Petr Cech gone and Laurent Koscielny likely to leave this summer, he is a candidate for the permanent captaincy at the club.
Xhaka’s midfield partner Lucas Torreira, who recently admitted he has struggled to settle in London, is also wanted by AC Milan.
“Arsenal could make Granit Xhaka captain with the Swiss set to stay”
And his agent did nothing to stop the speculation he could be off by admitting this week that a call from Milan would be “special” for his client.
But as things stand Arsenal do not want either player to leave, despite the need for Emery to raise transfer funds from sales.
The club are willing to listen to offers for Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Mesut Ozil and Shkodran Mustafi, while Laurent Koscielny is also likely to leave.
And they will bank around £4m from the sale of goalkeeper David Ospina to Napoli, with more outgoings expected.
