England boss Aidy Boothroyd reveals how Aaron Wan-Bissaka is feeling about Man Utd deal | Football | Sport

Wan-Bissaka, who is currently with the Under-21s in Italy as part of their European Championship squad, is distracted by the transfer saga says Boothroyd.

The 21-year-old suffered the ignominy of scoring a late own-goal in England’s opening group game against France on Tuesday and it has been suggested that the ongoing uncertainty over his future affected his performance.

Manchester United have been engaged in talks with Crystal Palace over a deal for the full-back and it is now believed that Wan-Bissaka is closing in on a move to Old Trafford.

Meanwhile, Boothroyd could opt to drop the talented youngster in favour of Everton’s Jonjoe Kenny for the next group game against Romania.

“When that speculation is flying around it is bound to turn your head,” Boothroyd said.

“For a young player who all he knows is Crystal Palace academy, Crystal Palace first team it would be daft not to say that in some way he must think about it.

“I would not be truthful if I told you anything other than that.

“I think when you are nearly going to move and all the things that would go through an older person’s head, who is more experienced in life, it would be difficult for them to cope with.

What I will say is because he doesn’t say too much you don’t get to find out too much. Aaron keeps things to himself. He is a very private guy.

“But having said all of that had he not scored the own goal we probably would be having this conversation.”

Boothroyd experienced a similar situation at the previous England Under-21s tournament in 2017 when goalkeeper Jordan Pickford was finalising his move to Everton.

“In Poland last time we had a similar situation last time with Jordan Pickford, a lot of speculation,” he added.

“Everton agreed the deal, they worked very closely with us and were very respectful in terms of not getting involved in our build-up.

“In the end it was done in a hotel down the road away from everything else, all the medicals got done.

“If that was to happen we certainly wouldn’t be blocking anybody, we’d be talking to people and seeing if we could help out – providing both clubs were happy with it.

“If that happens we’ll oblige and if it doesn’t suit us we’ll find a time when it does.”
