West Bromwich Albion ‘in talks’ with Celtic-linked Arsenal defender

West Bromwich Albion have identified a candidate to fill a problem position, according to reports.

Sky Sports News (16:19) claims they are in talks with Carl Jenkinson who is thought to be surplus to requirements at Arsenal.

The 27-year-old is out of contract at the Emirates Stadium but was named on the club’s retained list a few weeks ago.

He has had an injury blighted career that has included loan spells at West Ham and – in 2017/2018 Birmingham City .

Harry Redknapp brought him and Cohen Bramall to St Andrew’s in a double deal in the summer of 2017 only for Jenkinson to dislocate his shoulder in his first game.

He returned to the team, then managed by Steve Cotterill, the following January in an FA Cup draw with Huddersfield and went on to make nine appearances in all.

However, the last of those was in Garry Monk’s second game when he was taken off at half time in the defeat at Cardiff as Monk favoured the inexperienced Wes Harding.

He played eight times for the Gunners last season and has been linked with Celtic.

Mason Holgate manned the right back berth for the second half of last season but has returned to Everton at the end of his loan spell.

Craig Dawson has also played on the right of defence but is a natural centre back and there is already speculation over his future.

SSN claim Jenkinson is keen on more opportunities of first team football and worked under Slaven Bilic at West Ham.
