Lionel Messi vetoes Antoine Griezmann Barcelona arrival amid Man Utd links
The France international looks destined to leave Atletico Madrid – and the Nou Camp initially appeared his most likely destination.
Barca are keen to bolster their ranks with arch rivals Real Madrid on a spending spree.
But, according to sensational reports from Spain, Messi doesn’t want Griezmann on the books.
It’s suggested the Argentine superstar would prefer Neymar to return from PSG.
“Lionel Messi doesn’t want Antoine Griezmann at Barcelona”
“They tell me that Messi has vetoed Griezmann,” transfer expert and journalist Eduardo Inda told Diario Madridsta.
“It’s possible that Griezmann could be sold to PSG – and [Ousmane] Dembele is swapped for Neymar.”
Neymar cost the Ligue 1 champions around £200m in 2017.
But the Brazil international has had a challenging two years in the city of lights and might be tempted by a return to Catalonia.
Barca’s dwindling interest in Griezmann could be a huge boost to Manchester United.
The Red Devils need fresh faces and Griezmann has been touted as a potential target.
A United swoop for the France international might also appease Paul Pogba.
The influential midfielder has suggested in recent days that he’s considering a new challenge.
However, Pogba is close pals with Griezmann and the duo linked up well during the 2018 Word Cup.
Securing the Atletico ace’s signature would be a serious statement of intent from the United board.
So far this summer, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has only managed to secure the services of Daniel James from Swansea.
The winger is highly rated, but is viewed more as a player for the future.
Griezmann’s Atletico record is exceptional. The 28-year-old has scored 133 goals in 257 games for the La Liga giants.
ESPN pundit Craig Burley reckons Griezmann would be better suited signing for Liverpool though.
“I still think that Antoine Griezmann would be a fantastic addition to Liverpool,” Burley told ESPN FC.
“Bearing in mind how well they did last year and how close they came to Manchester City.
“The quality that he would bring and to have somebody that can rotate with Firmino in that front three would be a fantastic addition.
“I don’t know if that is something that could be done but I think that if they are going to bridge that gap to Manchester City then that is the kind of player that they need to be signing.”
