‘He is a warrior’ What boss has said about Aston Villa transfer target

Aston Villa are pursuing Huddersfield Town defender Terrence Kongolo, according to reports.

ExaminerLive report that Villa are ‘on alert’ over the 25-year-old who cost Huddersfield no less than £17.5m from Monaco.

Villa have already made Kortney Hause’s loan move from Wolverhampton Wanderers permanent for £3m and they are confident of bringing Tyrone Mings back on a full-time basis too.

Dean Smith is also said to be keen on Kongolo, who can play at centre-back and left-back, following Huddersfield’s relegation to the Championship.

The Netherlands international, who went to the World Cup in 2014, signed for the Terriers on a four-year deal last summer after impressing on loan.

And if this glowing endorsement from former boss David Wagner is anything to go by, Villa would be wise to explore a potential deal.

Kongolo took part in Huddersfield’s first win of last season and Wagner was full of praise for the player afterwards.

“He is a warrior, a real warrior,” said Wagner at the time.

“This is what I loved from the first second we signed him last winter and why I was so keen on making him permanent.

“Once he puts the shirt on and steps on the grass he is a different character compared to what he is off it.

What’s happening at Aston Villa?

“He can help us. Because of him we are able to play different formations and both formations in a good defensive shape and good defensive mindset.

“When you imagine him playing his first game after his five weeks out, unfortunately because of his injury, it makes his performance even bigger.

“He is very reliable, very strong in defending one against one and very calm on the ball as well – and he is a warrior.

“He likes to fight and he likes to win and he leaves everything on the grass.”
