Aston Villa close in on exciting attacker as Liverpool fear Mo Salah transfer exit and Paul Pogba’s Manchester United bombshell – Premier League transfer news
We take a look at what is happening at Aston Villa and the rest of the Premier League as the transfer window starts to take shape.
Aston Villa remain keen on Said Benrahama – but are being put off by Brentford’s asking price for the winger.
And Smith is said to be keen on a reunion with the player he signed from French side Angers during his time as manager at Griffin Park.
The claret and blues were linked with a £9m bid this week but Brentford have slapped an asking price of over double that on Benrahma to fight off interest.
That’s according to former Leeds forward Noel Whelan, who says he has spoken to Phillips’ agent about the 23-year-old’s future.
Villa are weighing up a £14m transfer bid after winning promotion to the Premier League.
They feel that offering top-flight football could tempt Phillips away from Elland Road but the Leeds youth product still has two years to run on his deal and is a firm fan favourite at his hometown club.
“I’ve spoken to his agent, who told me he’d love to stay at the club. There is no hiding that.”

It is understood that Leeds want closer to £20m for Phillips, who has already made 138 senior appearances.
Phillips was one of the stand-out performers under Marcelo Bielsa last term and there is little doubt about his ability to become a top-flight regular.
“The club need to put their money where their mouth is,” Whelan added.
“I have no doubt Marcelo Bielsa wants Kalvin Phillips at the club, and they need to show him that he is wanted by the club.
“He is away on holiday at the minute and, hopefully, when he comes back, he can agree a new deal. It’s definitely a test for (the owner) Mr Radrizzani.
“The interest in Phillips is real. You’ve got Bournemouth, I’m hearing Wolves and there is Villa as well.
“There’s Premier League teams that realise the importance of a player like Phillips.”

Pogba continues to be linked with an exit from Old Trafford after a tumultuous campaign for the Frenchman last term.
But his performances dropped off again towards the end of the season, with Real Madrid keen to take him to the Bernabeu.
