Sarri is expected to leave the club after agreeing a deal with Juventus to become their new boss.
And Lampard, who manages Derby, is the frontrunner to take over at the club he is record goalscorer at.
Chelsea’s official Twitter account have added fuel to the speculation by posting a picture of Lampard along with the caption: “On this day in 2001… Frank Lampard became a Blue!”
One wrote: “THE LEGEND IS COMING BACK.”
Another tweeted: “Frank Lampard became a Blue once again – bring it on.”
A third went with: “There’s timing… and then there’s this. Start. The. Bounce.”
One more said: “It’s written in the stars, its his destiny.”
Another social media user wrote: “Since we can’t sign players… #announcelampard.”
One said: “Might as well just announce him as manager now.”
Another agreed, tweeting: “We’re ready for the announcement now.”
Someone else joked: “On this day, Maurizio Sarri will be released from his Chelsea contract and Lampard will replace him.”
Another seems fed up with being patient, as he wrote: “Just tell us he will be the next manager you been highlighting him for past days now.”

Alongside Lampard in the running for the job are managers Nuno Espirito Santo, Erik ten Hag, Javi Gracia and Steve Holland.
Lampard led Derby to the Championship play-off final last season but came up short, losing 2-1 to Aston Villa at Wembley.
