Man Utd transfer news: Solskjaer to axe 14 players in squad overhaul | Football | Sport
Solskjaer is hoping to clear out the United squad this summer and is already planning for the following transfer windows as he puts his stamp on the club.
Up to 14 players could be heading for the exit over the next year, according to a report from the Manchester Evening News.
The mass overhaul is in response to United’s dismal end-of-season form where the Red Devils won just two of their final 13 matches across all competitions.
And while the likes of Matthijs de Ligt, Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Joao Felix are all being linked with moves to Old Trafford, who could be heading in the opposite direction in order to free up space on the wage bill?
Almost certain to leave
Neither Marcos Rojo nor Matteo Darmian are expected to remain with the club next season, with both having struggled for match action during their United careers.
Darmian has been linked with a £9million move to Valencia while Rojo has made no secret of his desire to end his playing days with boyhood club Estudiantes – although his bumper wages would prove a stumbling block.
Out of contract
Antonio Valencia and Ander Herrera have already left the club, waving goodbye to Old Trafford following the 2-0 defeat to Cardiff on the final day of the campaign.
Meanwhile, James Wilson and Regan Poole are expected to be released with the former plagued by injuries and the latter having impressed on loan at Newport County.
Listening to offers
Alexis Sanchez has endured a miserable time in Manchester following his switch from Arsenal in January 2018.
The Chilean is United’s highest earner but is out of favour under Solskjaer and will be allowed to leave, if the right offer comes around.
Solskjaer is also happy to let Timothy Fosu-Mensah and Cameron Borthwick-Jackson depart while the return of Axel Tuanzebe from a loan spell at Aston Villa could signal the end for one of Chris Smalling or Phil Jones – despite both signing contract extensions earlier this season.
One more year
The report also suggests that both Ashley Young and Nemanja Matic could be heading for the exit but will not be allowed to leave before next summer.
Both veterans are over 30 and have regulalry failed to meet their previous high standards of performance in recent months, although United will need longer to replace the duo.
