Everton Leading The Chase To Sign This 28 Year Old Arsenal Ace: Marco Silva Should Go For It

According to Evening Standard, Everton are favourites in the race to sign Arsenal forward Danny Welbeck this summer. The former Manchester United star has struggled to impress at the Emirates and will be available for a free transfer as his current contract with Arsenal expires at the end of next month.

Wolverhampton Wanderers, Crystal Palace and Newcastle United are among the clubs interested in signing Welbeck this summer. But, the report claims that Everton are in pole position to land the 28-year-old as manager Marco Silva looks to add more attacking options at his disposal next season.

Welbeck’s woes at Arsenal

Life has been difficult for Welbeck since joining Arsenal back in 2014. Injuries played a key role in marring his progress at the Emirates. But, it is his lack of productivity in the attack that drastically has minimised his game-time. In fact, the forward has surpassed the 1,500-minute mark only once during his five-season spell with the club.

He is also yet to score ten goals in a single season and in 126 competitive outings for Arsenal, Welbeck has netted only 32 goals, which is quite underwhelming for any Premier League striker.

Aside from his poor return in front of goal, the 28-year-old also looks tentative with the ball at his feet and has missed a plethora of opportunities. Hence, it comes as no surprise as to why Welbeck has struggled to make a breakthrough at Arsenal

Should Everton make a move for Welbeck?

Welbeck will likely be utilised as a back-up for Dominic Calvert-Lewin or a new striker should Everton opt to buy one. Despite his lack of end-product, Welbeck is an industrious forward with high work-rate, which could tune in well with Silva’s gameplan. Another critical aspect of Welbeck’s game is that he can play anywhere in the final third. That means he will be able to provide cover for not just for the main striker but also the wide-attackers in Richarlison, Bernard and Theo Walcott.

And finally, it is his vast experience in English that makes him an asset for any team. The 28-year-old has already featured in over 200 Premier League matches. And this experience could come in handy when settling into a new club.

But most importantly, Welbeck seems like a decent signing given the fact that he will be available for a free transfer this summer. Therefore, the Toffees should definitely make a move for the England international as they aim to dethrone one of the top six next season.
