Former Manchester United striker Robin van Persie makes Man City and Liverpool prediction

Former Manchester United striker Robin van Persie has risked upsetting his old club by claiming Liverpool will be the next team to dominate the Premier League after Manchester City.

Van Persie won the Premier League in 2013 with United after moving from Arsenal, and recently played his final game before retiring this month at Feyenoord.

That title was United’s last, and the power in Manchester has firmly shifted to City, who this year became the first side to retain the Premier League in a decade.

But City were run close by a fine Liverpool side who recorded the third highest points total in Premier League history, and Van Persie believes Jurgen Klopp‘s men are here to stay.

Van Persie also suggested that City will struggle to maintain their impressively high standards when manager Pep Guardiola leaves.

“It goes in periods,” he told the BBC.

“Now you have Manchester City, who are doing unbelievable. To win back-to-back titles is very special – that shows, really, that you’re a proper team.

“But it goes in phases. Maybe (City manager) Pep Guardiola will leave next year and that does something to a club. Maybe Liverpool will take over and they will dominate for the next few years.

“But I hope and wish Arsenal all the best to win the title. I know how difficult it is.”
