Football: Ajax win their 34th Eredivisie title in De Jong and De Ligt’s farewell match

Ajax secured their 34th Eredivisie title with a 4-1 win over De Graafschap on Wednesday night.
Goals from Lasse Schone, Nicolas Tagliafico and a double from Dusan Tadic ensured that all three points went to the side from Amsterdam.
Erik ten Hag‘s side finish three points ahead of PSV Eindhoven in the Eredivisie as they completed a domestic double after winning the KNVB Cup at the weekend.
Matthijs de Ligt, Frenkie de Jong and Donny van de Beek all played at the Stadion De Vijverberg in what could be a final Ajax appearance for all three players.
The club and several players have dedicated the title triumph to Abdelhak Nouri, the Ajax youngster who sustained brain damage after suffering a heart attack whilst playing in 2017.
Nouri, known as Appie, wore the number 34 shirt during his time in Ajax‘s first team, where he was on his way to becoming one of the brightest talents in Europe.
“Appie asked for the number 34 jersey because he wanted to win the 34th league title,” Van de Beek told De Telegraaf.
“Match 34, my last game wearing this amazing shirt,” De Jong said on Instagram, with the Dutchman joining Barcelona in the summer. “We did it for our friend.”
