Ole Gunnar Solskjaer questions some Manchester United players’ commitment
United suffered a season-worst 4-0 thrashing by Everton in what was their sixth defeat from the last eight to leave them marooned in sixth place in the Premier League. United did not have an attempt on target until the 86th minute and Solskjaer strode over to the singing away supporters at full-time to apologise for the shellacking.
Certain players led a quick getaway, with Paul Pogba the first down the tunnel, though Scott McTominay and Diogo Dalot stayed out and held their hands up apologetically. United have lost six from eight for the first time since 1989 and, when asked if he had seen enough hurt to be confident the players care enough, Solskjaer paused and eventually said: “I don’t know. You’ve gotta ask them.
“I’ve asked them, you’re not gonna get the answer from me. But of course if you wanna play at this club it has to mean more. I’ve said this as well, I want them to be the hardest-working team in the league, that’s what we were under Sir Alex, that’s what we were, what we’ve always been. Giggsy, Becks, Gary Neville, Denis Irwin, whoever you were. The talent you’ve go, you ran more than everyone every single week a shift up and down that pitch for your teammates and we have to stick together as a team.
Manchester United vs Everton reaction
“We can’t change the whole squad but it’s got to be one step at a time and I’ve said all along I’m gonna be successful here and there are players there that won’t be part of that successful team but there are players there who do have it.”
Solskjaer despaired at United’s inability to master the basics against a renascent Everton who had beaten Chelsea and Arsenal in their last two home matches. The United manager also questioned the team’s lack of bravery.
“We’ve got to apologise for the fans and that performance is not good enough for a Man United team,” Solskjaer stressed. “All the way from me to the players and we know we let the fans and the club down today.
“Because that performance is difficult to describe because it’s so bad. They beat us on all the basics, long throw-ins, stick your head in, our own corner kick, they counter-attack, their corner, first to the ball, good strike by the way, the fourth one as well, there are many chances to get rid of the ball. Stick your head in again. So we were beaten at all the ingredients you need added to your talent today.
“And last week as well there’s no place you can hide on the pitch. Eighty-five minutes before we got a strike on target, which is not good enough and we know that.”
