Rio Ferdinand blames two Manchester United players for goal after David De Gea mistake
Rio Ferdinand does not believe that David de Gea is solely to blame for Lionel Messi’s second goal at the Camp Nou on Tuesday night.
But their plans were quickly undone as Messi scored twice in the opening 20 minutes to all but finish the tie.
The second goal in particular raised eyebrows as the usually safe David de Gea spilled a tame strike from the Argentine to double Barca’s lead.
While on surface it appears that the fault lies solely at the feet – and hands – of De Gea, former Man United defender Ferdinand believes that the Spaniard shouldn’t have had to deal with the shot in the first place.
“Yeah it was [De Gea’s mistake] and again Fred in the mix of it there,” the former England international said. “He should just deal with that, just get rid of it.
But he still admits that even with Fred’s mistake, De Gea should have been more than capable of dealing with what was a routine strike from Messi.
He added: “But here, David de Gea, who’s been in superb form for the last three or four years. He’ll be so disappointed. It’s a very, very, very easy gathering that.”
