Joe Gomez returns to Liverpool fold for Porto clash

Liverpool have this evening been handed a massive boost on the personnel front, ahead of the Reds’ meeting with Porto.

Jurgen Klopp’s men welcome Portuguese giants Porto to Anfield in less than an hour’s time, for the first-leg of the Champions League quarter-final tie between the clubs.

Hosts Liverpool secured their place in the competition’s final-8 courtesy of an impressive 3-1 aggregate victory over Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich last month.

And the Merseysiders have since gone on to carry their fine form onto the domestic front, with a trio of consecutive league victories having seen Liverpool leapfrog Manchester City back to the top of the English top-flight table.

Gomez returns

And, in a massive boost to the prospects of the English giants ahead of their crucial season run-in over the coming weeks, Joe Gomez has tonight returned to Jurgen Klopp’s matchday squad for the first time in over 4 months.

English stopper Gomez fractured his left leg during a Premier League meeting with Burnley on the 5th of December, with a number of setbacks having seen the 21-year-old sidelined ever since.

Gomez had established himself as a key cog in Liverpool’s backline over the early months of the campaign, with the Reds’ youth product having begun to form the foundations of a top-class central-defensive partnership alongside Virgil Van Dijk.

When questioned on Gomez’s potential return to the pitch during an interview with Liverpool’s official website last night, Jurgen Klopp had the following to say:

‘If we don’t struggle players-wise, that we don’t have enough, then we should not think about Joe for the next one or two weeks. Because now he needs really proper training. He was around. That was good.’
