Philippe Coutinho makes decision on Barcelona future amid Manchester United transfer speculation
Philippe Coutinho has made a decision on his Barcelona future amid speculation linking him with a return to England.
His struggles in Catalonia have led to suggestions that he could be sold this summer and United had been mooted as potential suitors.
However, speaking in an interview with the Daily Mirror, the Brazilian made it clear that he has his heart set on staying where he is.
“This is my second season here,” Coutinho said. “I have won titles but I am always an ambitious and demanding player. So, I want more and more. But I’m happy. I wanted to play in Spain and I’m at the best club in Spain.
“My head is exclusively in Barcelona. Returning to England now does not fit into my plans.”
It is MEN Sport’s understanding that Coutinho was never a genuine transfer target for United.
The winner of the tie will meet either Liverpool or Porto in the semi-finals but Coutinho is not thinking that far ahead.
“Let’s see, I hope it happens (a meeting with Liverpool in the semis), but we have a big game first at Old Trafford,” he said.
“[Jurgen] Klopp is a great coach and it was only a matter of time before he got the team performing the way they are. They are having an incredible season but so are we – and I am focused first on Barcelona.”
