Liverpool player ratings vs Southampton: Salah gets an EIGHT – but FOUR stars struggle | Football | Sport
Mohamed Salah grabbed his 21st goal in all competitions as he ran from inside his own half to slot the ball home and put Jurgen Klopp‘s men two points clear with five games left.
And after a poor start on the South Coast, when they fell behind to Shane Long’s strike, Klopp’s men made sure of the points as Jordan Henderson adde a late third goal.
Liverpool’s shaky start had threatened to turn into a nightmare, though, when in the 10th minute the excellent Ryan Bertrand crossed, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg nipped in to flick on and Long was all alone six yards out to bury his shot.
Irishman Long should have put Liverpool further behind minutes later but he fluffed is lines from another terrific Bertrand cross.
Southampton goalkeeper Angus Gunn pulled off a fine save to keep out Sadio Mane’s close range header – and Naby Keita missed the rebound.
But Guinea midfielder Keita did a lot better nine minutes before half time as Trent Alexander-Arnold crossed, and his header found the net – with a little help from Gunn – to equalise.
Liverpool have now won five of their last six games in the league – and are unbeaten in 14 as they chase their first title since 1989-90.
Express Sport rates and slates the Premier League leaders as they moved one step closer to ending City’s reign as champions.
