Jimmy Shan’s brilliant team talk revealed as Tim Sherwood discusses managerless West Brom

West Bromwich Albion strengthened their grip on a Championship play-off spot with a 3-0 win that was anything but as comfortable as the scoreline.

Returning skipper Chris Brunt gave Albion a half-time lead hardly deserved on balance of play and chances created.

Second half goals from Mason Holgate, his first for the club, and Jay Rodriguez wrapped up the win on a night when Albion goalkeeper Sam Johnstone was at his absolute best.

Nine points now separate Albion from second-placed Leeds and, even more importantly, Bristol City in seventh.

Jimmy Shan said…

“My opening line to the players was ‘I don’t know if this is the right thing or the wrong thing to say to you, but the last three or four days have been absolutely surreal for me’.”

What the Swansea fans said

MD: Never has a game been won on possession, chances created or pass rates. Goals win games we ain’t good enough. End of

Kevin Begley: This team is not good enough and the 3 year plan will never happen if they continue down this road.

Jonathan Gough: If only football was about creating chances. I think that says more about how poor we are especially our finishing than how good we were to create chances.

No quality in final third & too many mistakes at the back I would summarise more so.

What’s happening at West Brom?

Sherwood says

Former Aston Villa manager Tim Sherwood reckons West Brom have the best squad in the Championship.

He also believes the Baggies, who sacked head coach Darren Moore at the weekend, can still squeeze into the top two.

Norwich City currently top the Championship with Leeds United and Sheffield United – who play each other on Saturday – not far behind.

Talking on the latest episode of the Debate podcast on Sky Sports, Sherwood said: “West Brom played excellent, they’ve got the best squad in the league.

“It’s not finished yet. If I was to have a bet I’d say they would be the team that could squeak into the top two.

“They’ve got experience, the blend you need to have success. You don’t need to complicate it, keep it nice and simple.

“You’ve got goal scorers who will get goals, Gayle and Rodriguez, you’ve got Dawson, Hegazi, Mason Holgate… one of the best young players around at right back, Kieran Gibbs at left-back. The team almost picks itself.”
