Man City news: Champions League win over Schalke an ‘EMBARRASSMENT’ – Craig Burley | Football | Sport
That’s the verdict of ESPN FC’s Craig Burley.
City demolished the German side 10-2 on aggregate, despite having gone 2-1 down in the first leg last month.
Pep Guardiola‘s side came back to win that game 3-2 after a last-minute goal from Raheem Sterling, giving City a huge advantage at the Etihad.
But on Tuesday night, there was little in the way of opposition coming from Schalke.
With 73 per-cent of the possession, and having 15 shots to Schalke‘s two, City controlled the game from start to finish.
The game was a modest 3-0 at half-time, thanks to a Sergio Aguero double and Leroy Sane grabbing a goal against his former side.
But in the second half City turned on the style, with Sterling, Bernardo Silva, Phil Foden and Gabriel Jesus completing the rout.
And ESPN pundit Burley blasted the German side’s showing and declared that their performance was humiliating.
“Schalke were just cannon fodder,” he said.
“They deserve to be in the Champions League because they earned that right.
“But they’re not having a good year in the Bundesliga this season, they’re struggling.
“The reason the first game in Germany was so close was more to do with the fact that City were sloppy and had a man sent off.
“This was a clinic. This really was an absolute clinic from all the key players.
“It was embarrassing, but I’m sure it was an absolute joy to watch for Man City fans.
“They absolutely played out of their skin.”
City are now focused on balancing three competitions, as they compete for a historic quadruple having already won the League Cup last month.
They still have a chance to win the Premier League, the FA Cup, and their first ever Champions League.
