Manchester City midfielder Ilkay Gundogan has said he has not yet made a decision on whether to sign a new contract at the Etihad Stadium.

The Germany international was the first signing made under the guidance of manager Pep Guardiola in 2016, penning a four-year contract after a transfer from Borussia Dortmund. It means he will only have one term left at the end of this season.

Speaking about his future to SportBild (h/t Sport Witness), Gundogan said there was no rush to get an extension sorted, making it clear he is happy with life at the Premier League champions:

“It may well be that the next one will be my last big contract. Such a decision must be well considered. We already had one or two talks. I do not feel pressure is on the subject.

“Sportingly, I am very satisfied with City, as there are less attractive tasks in Europe. In this regard, nothing stands against an extension. But nothing is decided yet.”

The German also said he is a “bit old-fashioned” when it comes to dealing with negotiations and said a rash decision won’t be made at the end of the campaign, even though he may only have a year left.

Gundogan has gradually cemented his status as an important player for City in his three seasons at the club. His first year was decimated by injury issues, while in the previous term, he was often the man to come into the side when one of Kevin De Bruyne, David Silva or Fernandinho were absent.

At the moment, he’s enjoying an excellent run in the team, starting three crucial games for City last week.

Gundogan was on form as Guardiola’s side beat Arsenal, Everton and then Chelsea—the playmaker netted in the latter encounter as City hammered the Blues 6-0.

In the win over Arsenal, he also played a stunning pass in the buildup to Sergio Aguero’s second goal.

Football coach and tactical analyst Adin Osmanbasic noted that the chipped ball has become something of a trademark:

The midfielder also produced a masterclass in the FA Cup win over Rotherham United, when he laid on four assists for team-mates:

With Silva, De Bruyne and Bernardo Silva all vying for spots in central midfield, it wouldn’t be a surprise if Gundogan was a little concerned about getting regular opportunities. In addition, the champions have a rising star on their books in Phil Foden, who plays in a similar area.

Guardiola is clearly a big fan of the midfielder, as he’s technically excellent and astute enough to carry out numerous different duties at the hub of the team. While his injury record will always be a concern, Gundogan has shown lately that he has a lot to offer City for a while yet.
