‘The performance deserved goals’ – What Nuno has said after every Wolves’ Premier League game so far this season

What has Nuno Espirito Santo said about the Wolves matches so far?

We’ll keep you updated with the comments of the Wolves boss on performances, results and important incidents throughout the whole season.

Here’s the exhaustive record of Nuno’s observations:

Wolves 1 Newcastle United 1 – 11th February

“It came late, but the performance deserved goals. We created situations but the final touch was not there. It is something we must improve and be more clinical. Credit to Newcastle they were so organised. Last minute shows the character of the team.

I don’t judge the work of the referees because it is so hard. The referees are so well prepared and must decide in a second.

“We should have done better, but the effort in the last minute and the way they believed shows character. But we require a lot of improvement.”

“No real threat”

Wolves 3 Shrewsbury 2 (5th February)

“I’m not happy with the performance but happy because we got to the fifth round.

“It was not one of the best games we’ve had, but we managed to solve it and it’s job done, let’s go to the next one.

“After we scored so early, I thought that we could have played better, then we allowed them to get back in the game. It made our task very hard.

“We were ahead in the first moment, and the first shot at goal we scored, but we kept the ball with no real threat. When they scored we started playing, but it was always rushed and not the best way to play football.”

“We are proud”

Everton 1 Wolves 3 – 2nd January

“We are proud of the work we did. We were better in the first half and in the second half both teams were organised.

“It requires a lot of shape and being compact but when we achieved the third goal the game was done for us.

“There is a long way to go and we can improve. We are not looking at the table until we go again.”

On the black cat that entered the field of play: “”Where I come from in Portugal, the black cat is bad luck so I never want to see cats again.”

“We were very compact”

Wolves 3 West Ham United 0 (January 29th)

“I was very pleased in the way we did it. It was a deserved victory, but with tempo and balance and I’m very pleased with the boys who were brilliant today.

“We were very compact and didn’t concede almost any chances to West Ham so that was a good one.

“Sometimes you play well and don’t achieve. [Matt] Doherty and Jonny did well and had chances. It requires a lot of effort and a lot of heart to keep going up and down.”

“Emotional”

Shrewsbury 2 Wolves 2 – (January 26th)

“It was a good game with an emotional and dramatic finish.

“They gave everything to draw the game. It was a hard game on a tough pitch and at the start of the second half we made a terrible mistake with the goal, which made it harder.

“We had to bounce back and try to find solutions. Sometimes the games can be like this and require extra effort.”

“In football it is never finished”

Wolves 4 Leicester City 3 (January 19th)

“Very good game, but a game we have to look at. Everyone enjoys the result, a fantastic game of football with two teams playing to win the game.

“After our advantage, we should manage the game better – but in football it is never finished.”

“You do not make a game plan with one less man”

Man City 3 Wolves 0 (14th January)

Wolverhampton Wanderers manager Nuno Espirito Santo

“Not only the red card changed the game, but the way we conceded with a long pass. The red card makes the task much harder.

“You know it is difficult to stop them but you try to avoid certain situations and it was a 30-yard pass so we must improve. But you do not make a game plan with one less man.

“You have to stay in the game and work yourself to the end, and my boys did that so we must look ahead and the next challenge is at home now.”

Neves’ wonderstrike

“It’s something that Ruben does and we encourage him to do. Last season we saw it pretty often and we know he has this talent. It was a good strike and it’s something he has to do and improve.

“We are happy for him. I think it was a very important moment for us, for the fans. They just scored the goal and to react with such a beautiful goal made Molineux come alive again. We were always in control of the game from there on against such a tough team.

Ruddy’s stunning save

“It’s very tough to be in the situation that John is. To be there and keep standards high every day, the way he does, is amazing. It’s really important.

“For him it’s a special moment to come back to Molineux. What he did last season will stay with Molineux forever. John is fantastic and we are very proud, pleased and happy.

“No excuses”

Wolves 0 Palace 2 – January 2nd, 2019

“The first half was very compact, both teams very organised but we didn’t quite get in the game. We have to do better.

“There’s no excuses. We didn’t perform well. Palace had one day less [to prepare] than us – so there’s no excuses.”

“To play like this at Wembley – the home of football – is the big thing”

Spurs 1 Wolves 3 (29th December)

“It is good for the dressing room but to play like this at Wembley – the home of football – is the big thing,” Nuno said.

“We have achieved something very special in getting to the Premier League and it has been a very special year.

“The second half was really really good. We managed possession, had chances and goals.

“We had a lot of belief after the equaliser – I would have said a draw was a good result, but I cannot control the emotions of the boys if they see space in front of them.”

“Our attitude was more active”

Fulham 1 Wolves 1 (26th December)

“I felt when Fulham scored it was unfair because we had so much of the ball and looked more likely to score – but this is the game.

“I am very happy with our second-half performance but in the first half we didn’t quite get in the game – it was not well played because there was no space. Fulham were so well organised, they allowed us possession but were so compact, and we know how good Claudio is shaping his teams.

“After half-time, the players that came in for us gave width and we managed to play much better in the second half. I think we were closer [to winning], our attitude was more active in going for the game. Fulham did not risk, always looking for counter-attacks.”

“We have to now rest”

Wolves 0 Liverpool 2 – (21st December)

Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah (centre) celebrates scoring his side’s first goal of the game with Virgil van Dijk (right) during the Premier League match at Molineux, Wolverhampton.

“We started the game well, chances for both teams. We didn’t maintain the consistency through the game and the start of the second half was not good. Better decisions or composure and we could have harmed a very good team.

“The boys worked very hard and it’s difficult to play against Liverpool, especially when they’re in front. We deserved one goal at least. We have to now rest.

“I’m happy because of the way we work and pass the moments football gives. We are consistent – the table doesn’t mean anything.”

“Compact and robust”

Wolves 2 Bournemouth 0 – (15th December)

Wolverhampton Wanderers’ Diogo Jota celebrates scoring

“In this weather, with the wind, cold and rain and against Bournemouth – I’m very proud. We did a fantastic job.

“Before we were in a bad moment. Now we’re in a good moment. It’s important to realise why. The boys’ character, the way they commit to the work on a daily basis, well done to them.

“It was hard for every player on the pitch. Both teams matched each other.

“The main thing today was staying compact and robust. I’m very proud of the work we do every day and the character the boys showed.”

“A draw was the right result”

Newcastle United 1 Wolves 2 – (9th December)

“A late win. Enthusiasm disguises things – we didn’t do the best performance. We allowed Newcastle to put us behind. We didn’t win our duels or manage the possession of the ball.

“A draw was clearly the right result. The red card changes the game. We were lucky to beat them in the end. Don’t always ask me about the referee please, it’s a tough job.”

“It was fantastic work”

Wolves 2 Chelsea 1 (5th December)

Chelsea’s Cesc Fabregas (left) and Wolverhampton Wanderers’ Romain Saiss

“It was a very good performance. In the first half, the organisation and staying in the game was important.

“In the second half, we showed desire to go in front. It was fantastic work from the boys. The only way to play these teams is you have to run more than them and when you have your chances take them. We have to maintain these standards.”

“We have to raise it”

Cardiff City 2 Wolves 1 – 30th November, 2018

“We knew it would be a physical game against a physical team. In almost all the game we were able to equal that physical intensity but there was one moment when we could not.

“That was the moment that we conceded. Until then, we were in control. We tried to play, knowing that it was hard.

“After they drew level we lost a little bit of control. I have nothing to say in terms of hard work, in terms of how we stick together as a team, but individually we have to raise it.”

“I think there was only one moment for us to score”

Wolves 0 Huddersfield 2 -25th November 2018

soccer.10ztalk.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/01/1548841569_784_Tempo-and-balance-What-Nuno-has-said-after-every-Wolves-Premier-League-game-so-far-this-season.jpg”/>

“It’s very disappointing for us and for everybody. For us, and for our fans who deserved a better performance, a better game. Today we were very bad, very, very bad – and when you play bad, you lose.

“The way we conceded, we didn’t create much. I think there was only one moment for us to score.

“Every long ball Huddersfield got was their possession. They won the second balls.

“Defensively and offensively, the team always has to be close together.

“The spells Huddersfield had in the second half are because we didn’t drop to organise and chase the ball.”

I want to thank them

Arsenal 1 Wolves 1 – Sunday 11th November

“To come to such a difficult stadium with our fans here – I want to thank them – and to say that we can compete to the end against a very good team in Arsenal says a lot about how we are working and how we want to do things.

“What enabled us to get those chances was the way we were defending, we were very organised and didn’t allow Arsenal to play.

“I’m very proud of our fans and our players. Let’s work more to try and make this moment of joy and happiness a little bit more.”

I will not ever change my principles

Wolves 2 Tottenham 3 – Saturday 3rd November

“I will not ever change my principles. I will not do it. We have a ‘how’. This is the most important thing we have – the ‘how’ we do things.

“Our style, our ideas, our principles with our mistakes that we have to correct. We will keep on moving, as we have since day one.

“We could have got everything. We could have drawn and we could have won. It was a great game of football and a very emotional game.

“We started good, creating, and then we concede – and then we concede again – but the reaction was good.

soccer.10ztalk.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/01/1548841569_268_Tempo-and-balance-What-Nuno-has-said-after-every-Wolves-Premier-League-game-so-far-this-season.jpg”/>
Nuno

“With a goal everything can change and we knew that after that we can change the dynamic.

“We showed the heart of the team and the character of the team. We played until the end – sometimes you win and sometimes you don’t.”

It’s something that we have to improve

Brighton 1 Wolves 0 – Saturday 27th October

Wolves had 25 attempts at goal against Brighton with Matt Doherty, Diogo Jota and Ruben Neves all guilty of missing decent opportunities.

“It’s something that we have to improve. When you create so much you must improve.

“But sometimes you have to give credit also. Not all chances are the same, there’s a goalkeeper, there’s bodies on the line.

“The way Brighton defended, they were brave. They put themselves between the ball and the goal. We have to improve and get better.

“I’m disappointed. I feel that we deserved more. I feel that we played better, better than last week, better than our opponent.

“I feel that we created a lot of chances and I’m disappointed because we conceded on the only moment that Brighton really had a clear shot.

“We didn’t stick to our rules and tasks’

Nuno was frustrated after Wolves’ standards dropped

soccer.10ztalk.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/01/1548841569_843_Tempo-and-balance-What-Nuno-has-said-after-every-Wolves-Premier-League-game-so-far-this-season.jpg”/>

“We must bounce back. We have to analyse really carefully what we did today and this week we must work harder,” he said.

“We didn’t stick to our rules and tasks. As a team they were more compact, we made mistakes and allowed them to recover the ball and create situations.

“It’s a bad result but the first half was a bad performance, they were better than that and achieved their goals. We didn’t move it, didn’t break, there was no mobility.”

Who will be Wolves’ top scorer this season?

Crystal Palace 0 Wolves 1 – 6th October 2018

Nuno reflects on another win and another clean sheet

“We did not start so good but when you look at the whole game we were the better team, the way we controlled the game in the second half,” Nuno said.

“The base of the team was here last season, so everyone knows their tasks.

“We go game by game – now it is the international break, players can go to their teams, enjoy it and and play some good football. We go game by game – there are no targets.”

Wolves 2 Southampton 0 – Saturday 29th September

‘What I know is the squad we wanted, we have it’

soccer.10ztalk.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/01/1548841570_400_Tempo-and-balance-What-Nuno-has-said-after-every-Wolves-Premier-League-game-so-far-this-season.jpg”/>

There was plenty of speculation in the tabloids over the summer linking Cavaleiro with a move away from Molineux.

It was reported Wolves turned down a bid of £12million from Fulham for their wing wonder at one stage.

“That was just rumours, we don’t speak about rumours. I don’t know.

“What I know is the squad we wanted, we have it.”

Wolves 0 Leicester 0 (Leicester win on penalties) – Wednesday 26th September

‘We have gone out of the competition without conceding a goal’

“It was a good game, intense. Leicester started strong but I thought we controlled the game after that. We were the better team and created more chances.

“The changes meant nothing for us, we kept the same philosophy. I was proud of the way the players worked this evening. Defensively we have shown we are good and for the second year in a row we have gone out of the competition without conceding a goal.”

Manchester United 1 Wolves 1 – Saturday September 22nd

‘Let’s improve, let’s get better’

“No, what we want tomorrow is to work harder because we have a game on Tuesday and then we go again on Saturday. It is the building of the team.

“I’m proud of the way we started the game, proud of the character that we showed after when they scored, and proud of the way that we played, the way that we defend, organised, putting bodies in front of the ball and the way that we created our chance. We played the way we wanted to play.

“It is not easy to come to Old Trafford. It is fantastic club, fantastic players, fantastic manager. We did it, let’s improve, let’s get better, so we can improve every week like this, this is the goal that we want to achieve.”

Wolves 1 Burnley 0 – Sunday 16th September

“It makes me very proud.”

“I am very, very satisfied. We played good football and stayed organised and created chances. Burnley are a good side and stayed in it until the end.

“If there is a ‘but’, we could be more clinical. But if we can continue to make these many chances, it makes me very proud.”

soccer.10ztalk.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/01/1548841570_197_Tempo-and-balance-What-Nuno-has-said-after-every-Wolves-Premier-League-game-so-far-this-season.jpg”/>

West Ham United 0 Wolves 1 Saturday 1st September

“From the first day of the season we are improving even without results.”

“It feels good, even if we didn’t win the boys worked hard. Both teams could have won but in that moment were more in control. We were in control in the first half. Happy for the fans, it is massive to come a long way and get three points.

On their goal: “Sometimes in the moment both could have won, West Ham had a chance late, to get the goal means we recovered the ball so high up the pitch, our midfielder recovered it and that says so much about the team. The boys did well.

“The confidence comes from performances not results. From the first day of the season we are improving even without results. When you establish your standards and we reach them that means growth, today we did it. Now international break and we go again.”

EFL CUP: Sheffield Wednesday 0 Wolves 2 – Tuesday 28th August

“Every time a player wears the shirt of Wolves, he knows what he has to do.”

“I think it’s very important, especially in the moment of the season that we are. We have only had three games so this competition gives us the most important thing: games.

“This is where you build players, this is where the players can really show what they have. Each game is important.

“We are all very satisfied. There are a lot of positives. The starting XI had youth, with players playing for the first time. The main thing is that the team competed well and went through to the next stage.

“All the cups are important for us. Every time you play there are positives and negatives that you can work on.

“Good defending, good movement off the ball – it was a good game. Every time a player wears the shirt of Wolves, he knows what he has to do. I’m very happy but we have a lot of work to do.”

Wolves 1 Man City 1 – Saturday 25th August

“It is one more game, one more tool to work on.”

“It was a good performance overall in all moments of the game and in all circumstances of the game, when we had the ball and when we didn’t have the ball.

“You have to be cautious and realise your opponents are the best team, the champions, stick together, reduce the spaces and have balance.

“When we had the ball we created chances and played good football. It was a good game.

“But – and there is always a but – maybe we should have managed those couple of minutes better after we scored. There were a couple of first passes that put Manchester City in control of the game but it is one more game, one more tool to work on.”

Leicester 2 Wolves 0 – Saturday August 18th

“I am not happy with the result.”

“We started very well but you have to be clinical,” said Nuno

“The way we played makes me proud but I am not happy with the result.

“We have to be accurate in the final moment. We could and should do better.”

Wolves 2 Everton 2 – Saturday August 11th

“We had to find solutions, it’s not easier against ten-men.”

He stated after the game: “It was a tough game as expected. One were were always chasing which needs energy.

“We had to find solutions, it’s not easier against ten-men.

“Fantastic atmosphere and a lot of work but we showed character.

“We can’t concede like that at home.

“We have a long way to go, tomorrow rest, Monday we will work hard, there is a lot correct.”

When quizzed about the impact of Ruben Neves, scorer of a brilliant free-kick and the crosser of the ball the lad to the equaliser, Santo remained calm.

He said: “Ruben Neves has talent, it’s about the team, this is what sustains the talent of the player.

“I had no concerns about Ruben, he adapted well to the Championship.
