Aston Villa loanee outlines his hopes for the future

James Bree is hoping that his loan spell at Ipswich Town will stand him in good stead for when he returns to Aston Villa in the summer.

The versatile defender, who featured in six matches under Dean Smith over the festive period after the injury to Axel Tuanzebe, was permitted a move to the Championship’s basement club on transfer deadline day last month.

Villa, by this point, had recalled Tommy Elphick, added Tyrone Mings and Kortney Hause on loan and had also made the signing of Frederic Guilbert from Caen – albeit the latter was sent back to France for the remainder of the season.

Bree, who came to Villa from Barnsley in January 2017, has so far featured in defeats to Sheffield Wednesday and Norwich City, but already has an eye on his long term future at Villa Park.

“It’s just about what I can do now and hopefully I can get some good games under my belt here then go back and push for a first team spot up there,” he told EADT .

In terms of my match fitness I’m not quite 100 per cent yet. I think I’m still a little bit off it but the games for Ipswich are coming in quick succession and that will definitely help. Maybe in a couple of weeks I’ll be bang at it. There’s definitely more to come from me.

“I’ve been thrown in there and had to try to do my job. I know I can perform better, get on the ball more and hopefully get more into the attacking side of it but at the moment I just need to do my defensive duties.

“Back when I was at Barnsley I had a lot of energy getting up and down the pitch so I think I need to get that back in my game and get some more crosses into the box.

“I’m liking it here and the lads have really helped me settle down. I’ve been thrown in the deep end a bit but it’s been good so hopefully I can kick on.”
