‘A heady mix’ – This is the reception Dean Smith can expect as he returns to Brentford
Dean Smith makes a first return to Griffin Park on Wednesday evening as Aston Villa look to resuscitate their play-off bid against his former club Brentford.
Smith spent three years in charge of the Bees and turned them into one of the most attractive teams in the division before being tempted by the offer to manage the club he supported as a boy.
Indeed Brentford thrived under his stewardship with two ninth placed finishes and one in tenth. They were seventh when he left.
They struggled initially under Thomas Frank but have picked up recently meaning eight places separates tenth placed Villa and their hosts.
Both need the points but one intriguing sub-plot will be the reception Smith will receive. Here are the thoughts of Bees fans taken from the Griffin Park Grapevine message board.
Judio 1999: Q Do we welcome back Dean Smith. A I will be
shouldbee: Nice “warm” reception for Smith and JT
marvelous007: Personally I don’t have an issue with Dean Smith. Although I think he regret it in 12 months. All ways had time for us supporters and always very polite. But don’t think he has the tactical nous to get a team out of the championship into the premiership. But I could be wrong.
ruislip bee: I’ll clap DS. Decent bloke did well for us.
IDontBeeLieveIt: I’ve got no problem with DS. You get the chance to manage the club you’ve supported since a boy, who’re in the category of “sleeping giant” of football, then you’re gonna take it. Will clap him off when we win
Griffingreen: Welcome DS, but dogs to JT.
Hamburger Hill: He may get a polite clap/nod at full time if we’ve stuffed ‘em…..other than that it will be a heady mix of mindless abuse/total indifference from me
Wise old Bee: JT showed a reasonable amount of respect when Chelsea played at GP. DS was too keen on sniffing around at other managerial jobs when he was with us, much like Rosler did. I think this could be a mad game, 4-4 or something.
Frank was asked about Smith’s return and what he’ll say to his predecessor, this is what he said:
“Welcome, I’m looking forward to having a chat with you. I think hopefully we’ll have time to chat before the game but definitely after.
“We’ve been texting and speaking each other so I’ll welcome them back. I hope our fans do that as well.
“They deserve a big applause when entering the pitch because they’ve done a top job for the club.
“Now they’re at Villa and I wish them all the best – not on Wednesday, but after Wednesday!”
And Bees’ fans predictions
cockfosters bee: I’m going 3-0 Bees, open game, plays into our hands
sonofabee: We will concede so I’ll go 3-1
WARFIELD BEE: I am concerned about our defence against the height and pace of Kodja & Abraham, also Grealish may be back and he controls the game.
wanderer paul: 3-3 Maupay Canos Barbet
marvelous007: Brentford 9 v Villa 1
jbee: Given the trouble Grabban gave us Abraham is a big worry. But I expect us to dominate the ball and have the best of the game. Not always enough of course….but I reckon 3-1 bees.
Guildford Bee: 3-1 to them I’m afraid
BaildonBee: If Villa have to work hard to score then we should be okay. If we gift goals like we did yesterday (and have done far too many times this season) we will struggle. 3-3.
Ken Richardson: Bees 2-1.
