Man Utd news: Peter Schmeichel reveals ‘problem’ involving David De Gea | Football | Sport
That is according to legendary Manchester United goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel.
De Gea has been named as United’s player of the season at the end of year awards for four of the past five campaigns.
But Schmeichel says a goalkeeper should not be picking up those awards at a club the size of United.
The Dane highlighted United’s 1-0 win over Tottenham in January, where De Gea pulled off a string of fine saves, as a key example where they rely too much on their No 1.
But he claimed once United sort out their defence, De Gea will not be called into action as often.
“I’m not talking him down at all but you don’t want the Manchester United goalkeeper to be the best player in the team for four years or five years or whatever it is.
“You want your strikers, you want your 30 goals from two or three players.
“You want competition from the wingers where they’ve put in 15 goals and 25 assists, that’s what you want.
“They are [meant to be] the player of the year.
“I think David De Gea is showing us what the challenges at Manchester United are at the moment.
“So whoever gets the job needs to tighten up the defence, needs to be more aggressive.
“Ole [Gunnar Solskjaer‘s] got nothing to lose so he’s attacking and attacking and it’s going really well for him.
“Manchester United are moving towards back to the identity the club has always had.
“The culture’s been brought back in and we will see David De Gea getting less and less work if the right people are being put in charge.”
