West Brom player ratings as Dwight Gayle scores but Baggies blow it against Norwich City

Jordan Rhodes struck seven minutes from time to deny West Brom a win that would have seen them leapfrog Norwich into third.

Fit-again forward Dwight Gayle put the Baggies ahead with his 14th goal of the season.

Albion maintained the lead for 71 minutes, but were undone by a Rhodes strike that was a carbon copy to Gayle’s.

West Brom have chased the Canaries long and hard in recent weeks. but the draw means they remain three points adrift.

Albion (4-3-3):

Johnstone 6.5

Showed his class with a brilliant reflex save to deny Pukki having previously been an onlooker. Couldn’t have done anything with the goal.

Holgate 7.5

Thrived on his Championship debut. His cross for Gayle’s goal was subtle and so clever. Already appears a very astute signing. His left peg’s handy as well, judging by one rasping shot.

What’s happening at West Brom?

Dawson 7

Flung himself in the way of a Buendia piledriver. That block rather typified his stoic display. Got away with one howler of a header though.

Gibbs 6.5

A real discipline to his defending. Not so effective in the final third as he has been.

Hegazi 7

An intimidating presence at the back. Never missed a header in open play and at the set piece.

Brunt (c) 6

Sent in one pearler of a first-half free-kick, but his crosses in open play weren’t so threatening. Guilty of loose passing, but also made key interventions.

Barry 8

Characteristically busy in the midfield. Disrupted Norwich with so many full-blooded tackles and nearly got on the scoresheet himself at the start of the second half.

Alexander Tettey of Norwich City and Jay Rodriguez of West Bromwich Albion

Harper 7.5

Hardly looked overawed on his first league start, and in a game of such magnitude. Did his bit defensively and also got forward down the right in the mould of Phillips.

Robson-Kanu 5.5

Highs and lows. So many overhit or wayward passes. Also some really nice flicks, touches and one exquisite piece of control. Nearly the injury time hero.

Gayle 7

Like he’d never been away. The fit-again forward, asked to play the wide left ‘Barnes role’, was soon among the goals on his return.

West Bromwich Albion’s Tosin Adarabioyo (left) and Norwich City’s Emi Buendia

Rodriguez 6.5

Pressed from the front and harried the Norwich defence, as he did at Carrow Road. Did a lot of the ugly stuff without ever really threatening himself.

Subs:

Sako (for Gayle, 85)

Leko (for Robson-Kanu, 90+1)

Subs not used:

Bond, Adarabioyo, Bartley, Field, Hoolahan.

Norwich (4-2-3-1):

Krul, Aarons, Zimmerman, Godfrey, Lewis (McClean, 81), Tettey, Vrancic, Cantwell (Rhodes, 81), Buendia (Srbeny, 67), Hernandez, Pukki.
