Manchester United linked with ex-Liverpool talisman, Reds star to stay and Chelsea on brink of two transfers
Here’s your round-up of all the news and rumours in the national and regional press – starting with Chesea who have a lot on their plate.
Chelsea could be about to complete their first January signing as they have agreed in principle deals with Leandro Paredes and Nicola Barella,
But according to The Telegraph they are stalling completing any transfers while they decide what course to take.
There’s certainly plenty going on at the Bridge.
The Express reckon David Luiz is planning to leave when his contract expires in the summer, to rejoin his former club Benfica.
And The Times says the Blues are trying to negotiate a buy-back clause in the potential sale of Callum Hudson-Odoi to Bayern Munich.
The Belgium international has been linked with Premier League rivals Wolves, West Ham and Fulham since the January window opened.
However, following the decision to sell Dominic Solanke to Bournemouth for £19million, the Reds boss is reluctant to lose another frontman as he looks to keep their title challenge on track.
However, another playing returning home could be Liverpool defender Alberto Moreno.
The Sun say he has told Liverpool he wants to return to Spain at the end of his contract this summer – specifically Sevilla from where the Reds found him in 2014.
Morena has been a bit-part player this season, struggling to break into what is the best defence in the Premier League.
Back from Barca
One man who could be heading in the opposite direction is Brazil international Philippe Coutinho – but not until the summer.
The forward has yet to hit the heights promised from his £142million move to Barcelona from Liverpool 12 months ago.
He has made just nine starts in La Liga this season, scoring four goals and has slipped down the pecking order. United could take advantage of the situation in the summer.
The Daily Star say that according to Italian publication Calciomercato, Barcelona are willing to listen to offers but the Red Devils will only be successful in their attempts to sign him if they submit a respectable bid.
The former England Under 21 international may have been a peripheral figure for Newcastle, making just 12 appearances this season but Manuel Pellegrini admires Shelvey and would reportedly ‘jump at the possibility to bring him to the London Stadium in this window’.
The Hammers have already fortified their midfield by signing free agent Samir Nasri and would need to raise money to sign Shelvey.
One possible way of doing that is selling Marko Arnuatovic in whom there is interest from the Chinese Super League.
