LaLiga Santander: Valencia cannot afford to miss penalties
LaLiga Santander Another disappointing affair for Marcelino
Valencia endured a frustrating afternoon at home to Real Valladolid. In what has become the norm at Mestalla this campaign, the home side were left to rue a series of missed chances, including a missed penalty, while their opponents scored a stunner with their only shot on target.
The referee gave a penalty to the hosts and Rodrigo Moreno decided to assume responsibility, despite Dani Parejo being the designated taker. The captain reluctantly accepted Rodrigo’s wish, only for the striker to hit a tame effort that was saved by Jordi Masip.
Before the penalty, Santi Mina failed to convert a Denis Cheryshev assist which appeared easier to miss than score. Few in the stadium could believe what they had witnessed.
Justifiably criticised at times this season, the Mestalla faithful on Saturday continued to back their side throughout. After the penalty miss, the fans stood up to back their struggling players, just as they did after the visitors’ equaliser. They deserved more.
No goalkeeper in the world could have stopped Ruben Alcaraz’s free-kick which levelled the match. Neto had a superb game but the Valladolid man’s 30-yard belter was too hot to handle. What should have been prevented was the ball lost by Parejo that caused Francis Coquelin to commit the fateful free-kick.
