21-year-old striker finalises loan move

Liverpool striker Taiwo Awoniyi has departed on his fifth loan deal since arriving at the club back in 2015.

The 21-year-old will spend the remainder of the campaign with Royal Excel Mouscron after seeing his spell with fellow Belgian outfit Gent cut short earlier this month.

Awoniyi managed just 22 appearances across all formats for the top-flight side, scoring twice in one Belgian Cup outing and grabbing another in an early Europa League qualifier.

The Nigeria youth international only started on 10 occasions across the first half of the season, with only five of those arriving in the league.

News of his early exit and subsequent switch to Mouscron was officially confirmed on Liverpoolfc.com.

Awoniyi joined the Reds from Imperial Soccer Academy back in 2015, but is yet to make his debut for the club due to work permit issues.

He was immediately sent out on loan to then-2. Bundesliga side FSV Frankfurt, where he made 14 appearances and scored one goal across all competitions.

The following campaign saw him team up with Dutch club NEC, playing 22 times on his way towards a second consecutive relegation.

His brightest period arrived in 2017/2018 when he made 31 appearances and scored 10 goals in his first stint with Mouscron, earning a new long-term contract upon his brief return to Merseyside in the summer.

Liverpool have already sent Ovie Ejaria to Reading on loan this month after terminating his loan deal with Scottish club Rangers. It remains to be seen whether Ben Woodburn will also depart again having returned early from a difficult few months with Sheffield United.
