Man Utd Transfer News: Kostas Manolas set to sign
A new central defender has been top of Manchester United’s transfer agenda since last summer.
Former boss Jose Mourinho was eager to land a centre-back but Ed Woodward was reluctant to spend on Toby Alderweireld, Diego Godin or Harry Maguire.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, the interim boss, is unlikely to have much sway over the club’s transfer policy but the Spanish press suggest Manolas could be on his way in.
It would be a surprise to see the Red Devils move for the Greek ace this month considering his €36m (£32.5m) release clause does not become active until the summer.
Manolas has revealed he would be up for a move to the Red Devils.
“I think I could make the difference anywhere I went, even at Barcelona – although I have never spoken to them.”
United were thought to be holding funds back until their long-term managerial situation is finalised.
And Solskjaer admitted last week that he is expecting a quiet month on the transfer front.
“I’m happy with squad I’ve got,” he said.
“I don’t expect anyone to come in but obviously if the club have targeted and identified a few and I think they might fit here, I’ll give my thumbs up. But it’s not just my decision.
“Nobody had to tell me I had loads of talented players [to inherit at United]. I can see that from outside.”
Porto’s talented centre-back Eder Militao has been on the club’s radar.
The Spanish giants are reportedly keeping tabs on the 20-year-old’s progress ahead of a potential summer swoop.
Meanwhile, Alderweireld has claimed he is happy at Tottenham after they triggered a contract extension option.
“I’m very happy to stay another year,” he said after his side’s 1-0 win over Chelsea on Tuesday.
“It was (a clause) in my contract and I’m happy Spurs gave me the confidence to stay another year.
“I’m only focused on things on the pitch.
“People can see every time I play that I give 100 per cent for this club – this is what I keep doing every time I play.
“This is my fourth season and I’m very happy.
“I’m doing everything to help the team.”
